Surin Islands

The Surin Islands consists of 5 granite islands densely covered with ancient forest. The two main islands Koh Surin Nua (North Island) and Koh Surin Tai (South Island) form the bulk of the land mass.The Marine Park headquarters are situated on the North island. They are tastefully designed, blending with the surroundings.

The Surin Islands are 50 km from Koh Phra Thong and easily accessible for day trips. It is also possible to stay on the islands themselves in either tented or bungalow accommodation. Sensibly priced food and drinks are available at the marine park headquarters.

Snorkeling and diving are the primary activities in the Surin Islands. The marine life and water visibility are amongst the best in Thailand.

Marine Eco-Initiatives

Blue Guru is proud to operate several international eco-initiatives. These are conducted with both tourist and local community participation.

Divers and non-divers can join in to make a real difference to the island's shoreline and marine environment. Divers can also contribute to international research on coral reef health and whale shark migrations.

Richelieu Rock

Richelieu's structure and isolation make it a magnet for a multitude of marine life. It is a lone outpost in this part of the Andaman Sea, displacing tidal currents, causing upwellings of plankton and attracting life from many miles around.

A definitive favourite are the whale sharks that regularly visit Richelieu Rock throughout the year and ideal spot for the internationally recognised Whale Shark Project for which Blue Guru dive centre is an official operator.

Whale Shark Program

As the dive centre located closest to Richelieu Rock, Blue Guru is keen to do everything they can to protect this world famous dive site’s most awesome visitor – the whale shark. Unfortunately, whale sharks are an endangered species. More research & action is needed to monitor their migrations & prevent extinction before it’s too late.

Whale Sharks - The docile giant

Whale sharks are the world’s largest fish & are docile plankton eaters. They slowly cruise through the world's tropical waters, mounths agape, filtering vast quantities of water (6000l/hour) through their gills for their microscopic food. Whale sharks can grow up to 12m in length and weigh as much as 14 tonnes. They are also thought to live as long as 100 years.

Diving or snorkelling with these magnificent creatures is an amazing experience. However, it’s essential that safe practices are followed, so passive interactions don’t harm whale sharks.

Certified divers can enjoy a few preparatory dives at the local Koh Phra Thong dive sites or do a PADI specialty course. PADI Digitial Underwater Photography specialty is a particularly useful skill to bring back evidence of your whale shark encounters.
